Sustainable Label Options for Your Packaging Needs

July 18, 2017

According to BeverageDaily.com, more and more companies are realizing the importance of sustainability when it comes to product packaging. The advantage of sustainable packaging isn’t just an ethical choice for businesses – it’s an economic one. As companies rethink how they can package their products more efficiently, sustainable options can help cut packaging costs across the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry. More importantly, environmentally sustainable products appeal to a wider audience, especially the younger millennial market that prefers eco-friendly purchases.

Today, technology has advanced and so have consumer preferences. Modern packaging technology can produce the same high-quality labels at a fraction of the environmental impact and today’s consumers actually care about making that choice. When you walk down an aisle at your local grocery store, do you notice a trend? Companies are going more minimalist than ever. Here’s why:

  • Product labels are getting better. Companies are using advanced printing techniques to communicate their brand’s message more effectively than ever. Using a small amount of space, labels can explain everything from nutrition facts to product instructions in a visually appealing 360° display.
  • Lightweight packaging is being embraced. Smarter packaging means lower shipping costs for the company, a smaller carbon footprint for the environment, and more space in the shopping cart for the consumer. Lightweight packaging is a positive choice all-around.
  • Increased use of recyclable materials. Consumer preferences have changed. They want green products, even if that means paying a slight premium. Does your product have the perception of being environmentally-friendly? CPG markets are changing to meet contemporary demand.
  • Sustainable packaging is more affordable than ever. Years ago, the choice was simple: sustainability was a good idea in theory, but far too expensive in practice. Today, the industry is more accessible, allowing more companies to promote sustainable packaging.

Fort Dearborn Company offers a variety of sustainable options (from substrates to processes) for each of our label formats and print technologies we provide to help customers meet their sustainable packaging goals. We’ll take a look at each of our label formats and cover some of the various sustainable options for each.
